Woman killed, man injured by gunfire at village in Kyauktaw

Khaing Roe La — One woman was killed and a man was injured when gunfire showered Long Shay village, Kyauktaw Township, on the morning of March 10, village administrator U Aung Mya Kyaw told DMG.

Daw Than Sein, 40, was fatally shot while she was at home with her family, while U Maung Tote Chay, 34, took a bullet to the leg while walking in the village.

Residents said that the deceased woman has four children and her surviving husband is in poor health.

“I feel so upset for her family. Her husband isn’t that healthy. Other villagers could face the same problems as her [Daw Than Sein]. We are so worried about it,” one villager said.

An anonymous resident traced Tuesday’s civilian casualties to small arms fire from a Tatmadaw base at Ngan Mountain, which is situated near the village.

Seeking comment on that allegation, DMG attempted to contact Maj-General Tun Nyi Nyi from the Tatmadaw True News Information Team, but an aide responded that he was busy.

DMG also reached out to Colonel Win Zaw Oo from the Tatmadaw’s Western Command and Brig-Gen Zaw Min Tun, also of the True News Information Team, but neither of them responded.

Since February 20 clashes between the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army (AA) had occurred with regularity around Tinma village, which is located near Long Shay village, but residents said the warring parties had quieted in recent days.

Still, U Aung Mya Kyaw said U Maung Tote Chay should be at a hospital but fear of being shot while transporting him had kept villagers from taking the injured man.

Long Shay residents also are facing food shortages as that same fear is keeping people from going out to purchase provisions.

According to the Arakan Students Union (Universities – Yangon), more than 130 civilians have been killed and over 360 people injured due to conflict between the Tatmadaw and the AA in Arakan State.
