Clashes have escalated near the strategic Natyaekan military base in Magway Region, close to the border with Arakan (Rakhine) State, as Myanmar’s military junta launches airstrikes and prepares counter-offensives against positions held by the Arakan Army (AA).

Fierce fighting broke out along the regional border between August 6 and 9, with junta aircraft bombing areas surrounding Mount Natyaekan. On the night of August 8, a junta fighter jet dropped two bombs on Talaingtaung Village in AA-controlled Ann Township, killing two civilians and injuring three others.

The airstrike destroyed a home and an adjacent auto repair shop owned by resident Ko Aung Paing. His 67-year-old mother, Daw Ma Lay Nge, and a 23-year-old shop mechanic, Maung Maung Nyan, were killed instantly.

Ko Aung Paing’s wife, daughter, and another employee sustained injuries, while five vehicles were damaged in the blast.

Mount Natyaekan sits along the vital Minbu-Ann Highway at the junction of Ngape Township in Magway Region and Ann Township in Arakan State. The mountainous terrain serves as a critical strategic gateway connecting western Myanmar to the central Magway Region.

To reinforce its encircled garrison at the Natyaekan base, the regime has deployed hundreds of newly conscripted troops from Defence Industries Factory No. 14 in nearby Padan. However, AA forces and allied resistance groups have repeatedly ambushed incoming troop columns, stalling the junta's advance and prompting heavy reliance on air support.

"The AA has encircled the Natyaekan base, making it difficult for junta troops to advance on the ground," a local military analyst in Ngape said. "In response, the regime is relying on airstrikes and attempting a counter-offensive toward Ann Township to relieve pressure."

Frontline sources report that the junta has also been reinforcing troop positions in neighboring Pazi and Gokegyi villages while using Y-8 transport aircraft to airdrop weapons, ammunition, and food supplies to troops trapped inside the Natyaekan outpost.
