KSPP To Contest All Kachin State Constituencies

The Kachin State People's Party (KSPP) announced it would contest all 18 constituencies in Kachin State during the upcoming 2020 general elections. Gumgrawng Awng Hkam, KSPP's vice-chair, said the Kachin party has already begun selecting candidates it will field.

“Our candidate selection committee is starting its selection process,” he says, explaining it will report its remarks to the party's central executive committee, which will make final decisions.

According to KSPP, there are six steps to select its candidates for the 2020 elections. The first step is almost completed.

At least 65 KSPP candidates will contest the 18 townships in Kachin State, Gumgrawng Awng Hkam says. Special priority will be made be to ensure that the selection process includes women, youth and the different ethnic groups in Kachin State. Candidates from different regions and different classes will also be selected.

The party will field candidates who are from the majority ethnic group in the township they're running in, Gumgrawng Awng Hkawm says. He says the KSPP will come out on top for the 2020 general elections. “We expect to win all the seats in Kachin State.”

The KSPP will contest seats in all houses, including the state parliament, the People's Parliament, the national parliament, and all ministers of ethnic affairs.

In 2018, the Kachin Democratic Party, Kachin State Democracy Party and United and Democratic Party - Kachin State merged to form KSPP. Later, Union Nationalities Federal Democracy, Kachin State Progressive Party, and Kachin National Congress Party also joined.
