Around 80 people have protested against the Mon State Hluttaw MP U Tun Min Aung from Paung Constituency – 2 in the Mon State’s capital Mawlamyine on April 3 over the issue of distributing the alluvial island.
“The landless farmers have sought his assistance several times. Letters have been sent to him seven times. But, he didn’t assist us. We went to see him last year. We arrived around 11 am and he told us to wait 15 minutes but we could only go back to Mottama at 5 pm. He has never conducted a field survey and he hasn’t assisted us. He obstructed when other people were assisting us. We are protesting because we couldn’t stand it,” said U Khin Maung Htwe, protest leader.
He said Paung Township Land Records Department visited the alluvial island in Mottama and met with the landless farmers.
MP U Tun Min Aung said he was being protested due to a question he raised in the Mon State Hluttaw on the issue of distributing the alluvial island in Mottama.
“The alluvial island has risen in Mottama since last month. The public reported about lack of fairness in the waiting list for distributing the alluvial island. When I looked at the waiting list, I found that a person put for 41 people. When I conducted an investigation, I found that there are around 300 landless farmers. They didn’t know about this. The people who have suffered have reported the issue. They are also citizens of this country and they live near the alluvial island. I wanted [the issue] to be in accordance with the law,” said U Tun Min Aung.
He added that he welcomed the protest since the citizens are using their full right for freedom of speech, which has been granted by the constitution.
U Tun Min Aung raised the question on the distribution of Mottama alluvial island during the parliamentary session held in the Mon State Hluttaw on March 22.
He is a representative of the National League for Democracy (NLD).
A protest against three NLD MPs was held at the Kyaikmaraw Pagoda in Kyaikmaraw Township last week on accusation of interfering in religious affairs.
