46 parties will be running in the in the election of the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee (UPDJC), UPDJC working group leader Sai Aik Paung told The Than Lwin Times.
The UPDJC political parties will be reorganized on April 27, with 92 official political parties invited.
The 16-member standing committee and 16 sub-committee members will be elected by voting system.
Among the 46 parties running in the UPDJC’s election are U Ko Ko Gyi's People's Party, Dr. Aye Maung's Arakan National Party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party, the National Unity Party and other ethnic parties, UPDJC working group leader Sai Aik Paung told The Than Lwin Times.
Another powerful ethnic party, the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), has told the Than Lwin Times that it will not run in the UDPJC’s election.
The NCA agreement provides for the formation of a UPDJC with 16 representatives from each of the coalition of government, military and Hluttaw, ethnic armed groups who signed the ceasefire agreement, and political parties.
The Arakan National Party (ANP), which won a majority in Rakhine State in the 2020 election, will likely run in the UPDJC coalition elections, chairman U Thar Tun Hla told The Than Lwin Times.
The UPDJC was formed on a temporary four-month basis last November by representatives of 53 political parties who attended a PR system meeting of the regime’s Election Commission.
It expires in March and will be extended for another two months. A new group of UPDJC political parties will be elected on April 27.
