The wife and children of Arakan Army chief Maj-Gen Tun Mrat Naing have left detention in Thailand after being offered the opportunity for resettlement in Switzerland on February 25.

Hnin Zar Phyu and her 11-year-old daughter and one-year-old son flew to Switzerland at around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday after the UNHCR negotiated their exit.

The family of the Arakan Army commander was arrested at a Thai immigration office in Chiang Mai on December 4, 2019 when they went to extend their visas in the Kingdom.

The Thai authorities were prepared to deport the mother and children to Burma, but human rights activists spoke out in opposition to move, pointing out that the family’s wellbeing and safety were under threat.

They remained in detention in Thailand until a third country agreed to accept the family.

Two children and wife of AA’s chief commander Maj. Gen. Tun Mrat Naing has left for Switzerland. They had been detained in Thailand before they left for third country.
