A Village in Bhamo, Seeks Reconstruction Assistance After Arson Attack by Military Council Columns

The Military Council's columns carried out an arson attack on public homes in Mya Lel village, Bhamo township, and local residents have indicated that they are now in need of assistance for reconstruction.

In early August this year, residents reported that houses in Mya Lel Village, located in Bhamo Township, Kachin State, were destroyed by Military Council columns.

A woman from Mya Lel village, whose house was destroyed, has emphasized the financial challenge they are experiencing in rebuilding and repairing these homes, highlighting their need for assistance.

"For people like us facing severe financial hardship, rebuilding a house is a challenging endeavor. As a result, we are currently seeking refuge with our relatives.”

A total of 15 homes were intentionally set on fire by Military Council columns on the ground, while around 10 homes suffered damage from airstrikes.

Furthermore, the barns were also damaged, leading to the destruction of stored grain. As a result, residents have expressed concerns not only about their current food supply but also about the prospects for the next year.

The Military Council assumed that there were Kachin Independence Army (KIA) troops in this village, which led to the burning of houses in this manner.

Since July, residents have been forced to leave their village due to the Military Council's initiation of artillery shell bombardments and airstrikes on Mya Lel village.

Residents reported that after they had fled, when clashes erupted between the KIA and the Military Council column, the Military Council set houses on fire and carried out airstrikes.

Currently, with both factions no longer present in the village, residents have returned to their homes, but they require assistance to repair and reconstruct the houses that were damaged by fire.

Residents whose homes were destroyed no longer have a place to live, and they are currently residing with relatives or within church compounds, according to the residents.
