Fighting has erupted anew in Rakhine State’s Kyaukphyu Township following a months-long lull, threatening a key coastal hub that hosts major Chinese infrastructure projects.

Local sources report that clashes between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar military junta resumed on Wednesday, spreading across multiple fronts, including the villages of Min Pyin, Tai Chaung, and Ava Taung.

"The fighting has started up again," a resident told Narinjara. "The junta launched initial attacks, and the AA is counter-attacking. Both sides are fully engaged."

The renewed hostilities follow weeks of military build-up by the junta, which continuously reinforced its positions and escalated troop movements around Min Pyin and Tai Chaung.

"The junta replenished its forces in several areas, including Malakyun, and deployed heavy artillery for this offensive," another resident said. "Fighting began yesterday, and the outcome remains unclear."

Although the military has relied heavily on airstrikes and ongoing reinforcements, initial reports suggest its forces have suffered heavy casualties without securing ground.

Kyaukphyu is a vital strategic location for both sides, owing to its natural resources and deep-sea port developments—a cornerstone of China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Myanmar.
