Flood-affected victims have run out of food and drinking water in Aw-ra-ma Village in the Rakhine State’s Ponnagyun Township after around 200 houses were submerged in the flood, the village administrator U Than Hlaing said.
A group led by the village administrator arrived in Sittwe on June 16 to submit the situation to the Rakhine State government.
“Our village is really facing difficulties. House and all items have been damaged by rising water. Seven houses have been damaged. Some houses were submerged. Around 200 houses were submerged,” said U Than Hlaing.
Continuous rain caused the development of a flash flood from the mountain stream. All the paddies and livestock have been drowned by the floodwater which rose between 13 and 15 feet high, according to him.
“The people are suffering. They are facing difficulties due to the flooding. They have nothing to eat or drink. The drinking water has become muddy so they can’t drink them. The village is still being inundated. Now, the water level has receded, but [the residents] cannot travel on the roads in the village,” said U Aung Win Myint, the village’s head of 100 households.
Aw-ra-ma Village has 206 houses and around 760 people reside in the village. The village is located very far from the town and the residents have to travel by land and water. The list of damaged properties has been submitted to Pon-na-gyun Township Administrator.
Other villages that are located near Taw-hpyar Creek have also been inundated by the flash flood. These include Chaung-pauk, Par-pay Group, Hsin-pon-wa, Hpa-kywel, Khwe-thay, and Kha-pwe villages.
