Aung Kyi Nyunt Steps Back From NLD-CWC Duties Due to CRPH, SCEF Roles

Aung Kyi Nyunt, a Central Executive Committee (CEC) member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), has taken a leave of absence from his duties on the party’s Central Working Committee (NLD-CWC), according to party sources.

Sources close to Aung Kyi Nyunt said he requested leave from his CWC role in June, citing an increasing workload across other political and revolutionary bodies.

Kyaw Htwe, a fellow NLD-CWC member, confirmed the move to Mizzima, emphasizing that "he has only requested a leave of absence from his CWC role" and remains in his broader party leadership position.

Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) spokesperson Sithu Maung also told Mizzima that Aung Kyi Nyunt took leave to prevent potential conflict-of-interest issues and manage his time effectively.

"Since around June 2026, U Aung Kyi Nyunt has taken leave from his CWC role of his own accord," Sithu Maung said. "It is fair to say this is because he needed to avoid a conflict of interest between his role as Chairman of the CRPH and his role on the Leading Council for the formation of the SCEF, and because he was unable to devote sufficient time to the CWC."

A source close to an NLD-CWC member said Aung Kyi Nyunt formally submitted a leave request letter to committee members on June 19.

Mizzima reviewed the letter, in which Aung Kyi Nyunt wrote: "Dear CWC members, I have served as a CEC member cooperating with the formation and work of the CWC. Now that fellow CECs Tun Tun Hein and Dr. May Win Myint are able to serve full-time, and given that I have taken on additional committee responsibilities, I am unable to devote sufficient time to the CWC and need to avoid role conflicts with my other areas of responsibility. I respectfully request leave from my CWC duties effective today."

Although he has stepped back from day-to-day CWC operations, Aung Kyi Nyunt retains his post as an NLD CEC member.

He will also continue serving as CRPH Chairman and as a Leading Council member of the Steering Committee for the Establishment of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF), a coalition formed by anti-regime revolutionary forces.

On July 14, Aung Kyi Nyunt attended an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) forum at UN Headquarters in New York in his capacity as CRPH Chairman, calling on the international community to sustain support for the people of Myanmar.

The NLD-CWC was established on October 30, 2021, following the arrest of senior party leaders during the military coup, to maintain party operations and coordinate with allied revolutionary organizations.
