Mon State's first COVID-19 patient—known as Patient 27—has recovered from the virus and was discharged from Mawlamyine hospital on Thursday.

The Ministry of Health and Sports (MoHS) reported that Patient 27 tested positive for COVID-19 on April 10 and then was admitted to Mawlamyine public hospital.

"She is young and her immune system is good. The patient doesn't have heart or lung disease. Therefore, medical treatment is very effective on her," the hospital’s Dr. Kyaw Myint told NMG.

The patient is 24 years old, from Kyaikmayaw Township but had returned from Thailand through the Myawaddy border crossing in March 20, where she had gone to seek work.

Before she left Thailand, she reportedly sought medical treatment for stomach pains, which returned once back in Kyaikmayaw on home quarantine. Her COVID-19 test was sent to the National Health Laboratory in Yangon on April 4.

“To avoid virus infection, people should not go outside without a reason. People should stay at home. I am so happy because I am allowed to leave the hospital,” Patient 27 told NMG once she was discharged.

Officials from Mon State’s health department said that coronavirus tests from 321 people have been processed as of May 4. Patient 27 remains the only person who has tested positive; three tests are still pending.

According to the MoHS, there were 176 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Burma, with six deaths and 62 recoveries at the time of reporting.
