Three Rakhine youths have been remanded in custody for two more weeks today after they were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a corporal from the Military Affairs Security Unit (MASU) in Sittwe, Rakhine State

Their first remand expired today so they were taken to the Sittwe Township Court where they were remanded for another two weeks.

“We have been remanded in custody for another two weeks from October 22 to November 5,” said Ko Aung Zaw Linn, one of the suspects said to the media after today’s court appearance.

“We are remanded until the 5th next month (November 5) to do another examination. The murder of the MASU's corporal was examined [today]. There weren’t any other examination,” he said.

The detained youths are Ko Aung Zaw Linn from Buthidaung, Khine Bo Bo, also known as Ko Khine Thaw from Pauk Taw, and Ko May Yu Tun from Rathedaung Township.

The three youths were arrested on October 10 and 11 on suspicion of involvement in the murder of military corporal Ko Phoe Lone from the MASU, who was gunned down on the night of September 25.

“The examination was made in accordance with the law. There weren’t any oppression or pressure,” said Ko Khine Thaw, one of the detained youth.

Ko May Yu Tun said they did not kill the MASU’s corporal and they have been arrested to disperse politically active youths.
