A Rakhine traditional storytelling competition was held in Sittwe on December 11 ahead of celebrations for the upcoming 43rd Rakhine State Day on December 15.

“Students from 20 schools took part in the competition,” said U Sein Tun Hla, secretary of the competition organizing committee.

This was the second year the competition was held.

U Sein Tun Hla said the event is a way to preserve and even revive disappearing traditions.

“Rakhine people had a tradition of telling stories before bed. But these bedtime stories have disappeared,” he said.

Winners of the competition receive K70,000 for the first prize, K60,000 for the second prize, and K50,000 for the third prize, and will be presented with their priz during the Rakhine State Day ceremony.

In addition to the storytelling competition, an essay competition and an art competition will also be held in the run-up to the 43rd Rakhine State Day.
