Remnant bomb blast kills three-year-old, injures four others in Mrauk-U

On the evening of August 3, a 3-year-old child was murdered, and four children were wounded in a remnant grenade bomb explosion in Mrauk-U Township, Arakan (Rakhine) State.

Maung Myo Myat Phyo (3), the son of Daw Thwe Thwe Soe and U Agyi Maung of  Teinyo Ywa Thit Village, Mrauk-U Township, was the deceased.

Maung Kaung Myat Oo (4), Maung Phyo Nyein Naing (10), Maung Kaung Myat Htun (11), and Maung Myo Win Oo (12) from the Waithali village in Mrauk-U Township are the four wounded children.

"The youngster discovered this grenade in an unoccupied residence," a man from Mrauk-U told the local press.

“He grabbed the grenade and tossed it. It blew up when he threw it, hurting him and four other kids who were playing close by. The youngster who threw the grenade passed away upon arriving at the hospital, while the other four wounded children are being cared for.”

According to a local, the four injured youngsters are out of danger and receiving medical care in Tinyo Ywa Thit Village.

He said, “The other youngsters are no longer in a life-threatening situation.”

In February and March of this year, landmine and other explosive remnants of war explosions in Rakhine State caused eight fatalities and over twenty injuries, according to a report by Narinjara News Agency.

Local residents in Rakhine State are pressing officials to remove the explosive remnants of war as soon as possible because there has been a sharp rise in the number of landmine detonations and other explosions caused by explosive remnants of war.
