Three Consecutive Days of Airstrikes in Mindat Township

The junta has launched airstrikes on Mindat Township villages near to Mindat Town in Chin State on three consecutive days in May 2025, dropping 500-pound bombs and cluster bombs.

Currently, Khonumthung News cannot reveal the names of any of these villages at the request of Mindat Chinland Defence Force (CDF) which helped set up the revolutionary Mindat Township People's Administration that was established by Chin resistance forces after 21 December 2024, when they finally took control of Mindat Town, the last part of the township still being held by the junta.

The attacks happened from 15 to 17 May. On just one day, 15 May, the airstrikes killed two, injured 11 and damaged many buildings, according to Ko Yaw Man, a spokesperson for Mindat Township Administration.

On 17 May, at around 12:30 pm junta aircraft dropped 10 bombs, some of which appeared to be cluster munitions, on and around a village close to Mindat Town. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but several houses and other structures in the village were damaged, according to Ko Yaw Man.

He said: “During the airstrike, the junta aircraft made two bombing runs. Bombs dropped all over the village and even landed in a stream just outside. When we checked the area afterward, we saw signs that seemed to indicate that cluster bombs had been used. Thankfully, no one was hurt. I think it's because the villagers, having been through this before, reacted quickly and took cover in underground shelters. That probably saved lives.”

On 16 May, the junta carried out an airstrike on another village near Mindat Town. Casualty figures and details of damage for that attack are currently unknown.

On 15 May a junta aircraft also dropped two 500 pound-bombs onto yet another village near Mindat Town, according to Ko Yaw Man, who said the attack killed a 13-year-old student and a 40-year-old woman, injured 11 civilians, caused heavy damage to a village school and hit 42 houses, some of which were completely burned down.

Previously, Chin World reported that the 15 May airstrike killed three, injured a further 10 people and destroyed six houses. Subsequent investigations have revealed these figures to be inaccurate and incomplete.

The junta has carried out at least 13 airstrikes on the resistance force controlled Mindat Township from February to May 2025. The affected communities are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
