Displaced Hindus and Muslims from Maungdaw Permitted to Come Back to Town

Conflict-displaced Muslims and Hindus have been permitted to go back to Maungdaw Town, situated on the western border of Arakan State, currently controlled by the Arakan Army (AA).

Individuals who have accessed the town have indicated that the Arakan Army (AA) started allowing their return as of January 25.

A Muslim from the village of Pan Taw Pyin who came back stated, "We were permitted to return to the town beginning January 25. Certain individuals have entered, but not all have arrived thus far."

Reports suggest that access is provided according to prior household registration.

A Muslim who was displaced and entered the town remarked, "When a family comes into the town, they are welcomed according to their household registration. Their names appear on the list, and when they arrive, those not listed are turned away. They also take family pictures."

A Hindu local mentioned that individuals are being checked upon their arrival in Maungdaw Town because of worries regarding possible connections to terrorist organizations.

Verification is necessary because of worries that groups like ARSA might penetrate the Muslim and Hindu communities being relocated to the town. There aren't any other problems. Muslims and Hindus have been permitted to return to the town beginning January 25," he stated.

The Arakan Army (AA) completely seized the Maungdaw area on December 8, 2024.

Residents say that numerous Muslims and Hindus are still reluctant to go back to the town because of fears and doubts.

Displaced Muslims indicated that due to armed factions like ARSA, RSO, and ARA, access to Maungdaw town is permitted only after extensive checks and the provision of required household documents.
