Ye Township Betel Nut Trading Suspended Due to a Lack of Demand

According to those active in the marketplace, betel nut trading from Ye Township has been suspended for an indefinite period,  because there is no demand in the Mon State market.

According to one betel nut seller, trade  has stopped.

"When merchants come to sell betel nuts, they have to invest money and pay. But now there is no trade and they can't invest and buy anymore. That's why the business has stopped," he said.

Only pre-existing stock or inventory of betel nut is now being sold, and the purchase of new stock has stopped for about one week.

According to another trader of betel nuts and leaves from the Mawlamyine market, there are people who buy and store these goods even though there is no trade in the local market.

"There are people who buy directly from farm workers at a preferred price. They bought it because they have money, but there are no retail sales taking place, yet," he said.

Until the second week of September, the price of betel nut was 9,200 kyat per viss, but due to the suspension of trading, the price of betel nut fell back to 8,000 kyat per viss on the morning of September 24.

Dried betel nuts from Mon state are exported to Yangon, Bago, and other states.
