Nearly 1,000 villagers forced to flee recent military airstrikes in southern Myanmar are now trapped by severe flooding, with rising waters cutting off roads and stoking fears of acute food shortages, according to residents and displaced persons.

Monsoon downpours have inundated the Ye Chaung Phyar region of Ye Township in Mon State since August 20, submerging key transportation routes in up to 3 feet of water.

Torrential currents have forced displaced families sheltering in Kyaung Ywar village to evacuate to secondary locations along the local stream.

The humanitarian strain follows an August 11 junta airstrike that triggered the mass flight of residents from at least five surrounding villages. Continued aerial reconnaissance by the military has kept villagers from returning home, forcing them to rely on temporary shelters and host families.

“We are staying with relatives and acquaintances, but Kyaung Ywar is flooded again,” said a male resident of Ye Township. “The water is waist-deep, and we can only get around by boat. The rain and wind are so loud we can’t even hear if military aircraft are flying overhead.”

Floodwaters have severed the main road linking Kyaung Ywar village to neighboring Natgyi, Leikpoke, and Kawttar villages, rendering cars and motorbikes unusable.

Residents have resorted to using small boats to navigate the currents and transport essential supplies.

With supply lines cut, local grocery shops are rapidly exhausting their remaining inventory, raising concerns over an imminent food crisis if heavy rains persist.

“If the rain continues like this, getting food will become extremely difficult,” a Kyaung Ywar resident said. “Shops are selling whatever is left in stock. Once those supplies run out, we will be in deep trouble.”
