Kyaw Thu Htay — A 17-year-old who was seriously injured during an April shelling of Kyauk Seik village in Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township recently had to have his leg amputated, family members said.

Mg Kyaw Soe Win was one of 13 people injured after artillery shells landed in the village on April 13, when eight civilians were also killed.

Due to the severity of the injuries, Mg Kyaw Soe Win’s left leg was amputated while he was being provided medical treatment at Sittwe Hospital, said his father U Maung Win Hlaing.

The nerves in his right leg were also destroyed, his father said, adding that Mg Kyaw Soe Win was transferred to Yangon General Hospital for further treatment.

“After he had been undergoing medical treatment at Sittwe Hospital for 20 days, the orthopedic doctor told me to go to Yangon. The doctor in Yangon Hospital said his nerves were destroyed. I am so sad for my son,” U Maung Win Hlaing said.

The father and son are now back in Sittwe, where the latter is receiving outpatient treatment at the Alodawpyae Monastery.

Conflict between the Tatmadaw and Arakan Army in Arakan State has resulted in more than 164,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), and hundreds of civilian casualties.
