Poe War — Seven men who were recently released from Kyaukphyu Prison have been rearrested at the facility's gates by military junta forces, hit with new charges, and sentenced to 10 years in prison each.
The seven individuals have been identified asU Kyaw Hla Aung, Zedi Taung Ward, U Mya Win (46), Taung Rin Ward, U Maung Mae (68), Central Ward, U Saw Yan Naing (39), Central Ward, U Thant Zaw Lin (also known as Anyatar, 45), Kalaba Taung Ward, U La Min Phyo (38), Kyaukphyu Township and U Htun Min Phyo (34) in Kyuakphyu Township.
According to a local resident, the Kyaukphyu District Court handed down the 10-year sentences on June 8.
"Some of them were released on parole, while others had fully served their prison terms," the resident said. "They were immediately arrested at the prison gate, hit with false charges, and given long sentences. This is devastating and deeply unjust."
The men were originally freed in two waves on April 17 and April 30 under different circumstances.
U Thant Zaw Lin, U La Min Phyo, and U Tun Min Phyo were released under a regime amnesty, while the remaining four individuals were freed after completing their initial sentences.
Witnesses report that upon stepping outside, the men were immediately handcuffed by the Kyaukphyu City Police Station Commander and taken back into custody.
The military authorities filed new cases against them under Sections 50(j) and 52(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Law before sending them directly back into Kyaukphyu Prison.
Previously, the junta had jailed the group under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Association Act, handing them maximum three-year terms for allegedly communicating with and supporting the Arakan Army (AA).
This incident reflects a broader, ongoing pattern across Myanmar, where Min Aung Hlaing’s military regime continues to systematically rearrest political prisoners at prison gates to indict them on harsher, consecutive charges.
