According to statements from the meeting, revolutionary forces have urged ASEAN to end its silence on the Myanmar military junta’s brutal acts during the Stakeholder Engagement Meetings on Myanmar (SEMs), which were held throughout Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN chairmanship.
The meetings, led by the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, included representatives from the National Unity Government (NUG), the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), ethnic revolutionary organizations (EROs), advisory councils, federal units, and other relevant stakeholders.
The revolutionary groups demanded that ASEAN end its silence regarding ongoing atrocities committed by the military regime, including airstrikes, mass killings, and attacks on civilians and humanitarian personnel.
“We want ASEAN and the world to pay attention to and publicly speak out about the junta’s brutalities against ethnic people and children. Only then will the junta realize that its actions are unacceptable. Our country’s struggle is deeply connected with the voices of our neighbors and ASEAN,” said an official from the New Mon State Party (Anti-Dictatorship), NMSP(AD).
The official added that if neighboring ASEAN countries clearly and firmly condemn the junta’s atrocities, it would greatly contribute to regional peace.
“If they speak out boldly and clearly, we can have greater hope. The peace of one country depends on its neighbors. At a time when alliances are being sought, it would be very helpful and encouraging if neighboring countries exposed and called out the junta’s crimes,” he continued.
The revolutionary forces also urged ASEAN to reject and refuse to recognize any elections organized by the military junta and to call for the release of all political prisoners, including President U Win Myint, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, journalists, activists, and community leaders who have been arbitrarily detained.
The participants expressed deep concern over the worsening situation in Myanmar since the military coup and reaffirmed their commitment to restoring democracy and protecting human rights through inclusive dialogue at the SEMs.
The statement further expressed hope that Malaysia, as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, would uphold ASEAN’s core principles and continue to lead decisively in promoting regional peace, justice, and the rule of law without compromise.
It was also reported that Mon revolutionary forces, including the New Mon State Party (Anti-Dictatorship), NMSP(AD), and the Mon State Federal Council (MSFC), participated in the meeting held in Malaysia.
