Poe War —According to a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) report, civilians in Rakhine State and central Myanmar are bearing the brunt of the Burmese military's attacks.
The report was submitted during the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which is being held from June 15 to July 10, 2026.
Between August 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026, credible sources verified a minimum of 702 civilian deaths nationwide. Most of these fatalities occurred in Rakhine and the central regions.
According to a recent report by the United Nations Human Rights Office, credible sources verified at least 702 civilian deaths during the six-month reporting period. Of these victims, 573 were killed in Rakhine state and central regions. Airstrikes caused 476 of the total deaths. This toll included 111 casualties, among them 43 women and 10 children, that occurred prior to the commencement of voting in December.
Facing continued ground defeats, the military junta has increasingly resorted to aerial bombardment. The military is utilizing fighter jets, drones, gyrocopters, and paramotors to drop explosives on civilian areas. Rakhine remains the primary target of these airstrikes and the region with the highest overall death toll.
Sagaing has also become exceptionally dangerous as the Burmese military attempts to reassert control over the territory. During the six-month reporting period, 191 civilians in Sagaing, including 60 women and 30 children, were killed. Airstrikes caused 70% of these fatalities.
In a particularly devastating incident on the evening of December 5, a Burmese military plane bombed a tea shop in Dipayin Township while locals gathered to watch an ASEAN Games football match. Reliable sources indicate the strike killed at least 19 civilians, including four women and a child, and injured more than 20 others.
