Cargo Truck Drivers Negotiate Road Reopening with Resistance Forces in Indaw

Cargo truck drivers in Indaw Township, Sagaing Region, met with local anti-junta resistance forces to negotiate the reopening of key transit routes following indefinite closures that left dozens of vehicles stranded for nearly three weeks.

Ongoing fighting and security risks along the main Mandalay–Myitkyina Highway have forced commercial drivers and residents to rely on unpaved alternative routes through Indaw.

However, resistance forces recently shut down the heavily trafficked bypasses, citing the need for road maintenance and gravel paving.

Drivers reported that the detour recommended by resistance fighters was severely degraded by monsoon rains, leaving heavy cargo trucks unable to pass.

"We gathered not to protest, but to explain our hardship and seek a workable solution," a source familiar with the negotiations said. "They gave us a verbal assurance that once the gravel paving is completed, the route will reopen to traffic, with adjustments expected within two to three days."

Most alternative routes in the area consist of narrow, single-lane dirt roads.

Residents noted that heavy rainfall routinely creates deep mud and causes vehicles to slide off the tracks, resulting in severe traffic gridlocks and supply chain delays across upper Myanmar.
