No significant progress on airport and port project after two years

An  international airport and port project planned by the military junta, has not yet begun, say local residents.

The international airport is to be built near Kawparan village, Mudon Township, and the port is planned to be built between Balouk Nyaung Wine and Welkale village near the sea outlet, according to the military junta.

These projects have been underway for the past two years, but no substantial work has materialized, according to local community members.

"Until now, nothing significant has begun, only one road has been built. There is nothing special here yet,"  said one source.

The military council earmarked more than 4,600 acres of farmland, to be used  for the project.

According to the provincial military junta, roughly 19 billion Kyat in compensation has been paid to landowners for both project sites. Compensation has been paid to nearly 360 farmers at the rate of 40 lakhs per acre, including land and crop compensation.

"The construction part of the main airport is not yet there, but the irrigation department has entered to make the side drains. There is only one drain for the flow of water and they are preparing drainage for the airport site. The rest of the work has not yet started,” said a spokesman for the state military junta.

Some  people have not received any compensation for their land, and other landowners expressed that the compensation is inadequate.  A resident of Mudon Township said, "the land along the road from Mudon to Kawparan village was bought by them for 70/80 lakhs per acre, yet they are being compensated half of what they paid."
