More than 13,000 people have applied to have their names added to the voter list in Mon State, the state’s election commission has announced.
More than 187,000 people came to check their names on the voter list between July 25 and August 7, according to the commission.
To add their name to the list, people must apply with what is known as Form 3—a move which 13,000 people have done.
To make corrections to a name or personal information or to remove an individual from the list because they have since died, Form 4 is required.
The Mon State election commission reported that more than 2,500 people applied with Form 4 to remove a name from the voter list, and more than 4,300 people applied to make changes to their information.
"We will announce a more correct voter list next time,” Hein Lin Htet, the head of the Mon State election commission, told NMG. “We will add missing names to the voter list. We will also remove the name of dead persons from the voter list. We will also correct missing information or incorrect information. We will do it in accordance with the law.”
The voter list can be amended until August 14, extended from August 7 by the Union Election Commission. State election commissions, local authorities, and village headmen have launched a campaign encouraging locals to check the voter list for accuracy.
“If people come to check the voter list and correct voter information, we will have a complete voter list next time. So people need to check the voter list. Voters can edit their information,” Hein Lin Htet told NMG.
However, ward and village electoral authorities have said that local interest in checking the voter list remains low.
"Few people have come to check their name on the voter list. People in remote areas and workers in town are not interested in checking the voter list,” Khine Khine Cho Myint, a campaigner on the issue, told NMG.
There are a total of more than 1.76 million voters in Mon State who can participate in the general election on November 8, according to the state election commission.
