Mon State Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan warned governmental departments in Mon State to immediately adjust their corruption practices committed against citizens.
Dr. Aye Zan gave the warning in his opening speech during a workshop on the prevention of corruption held on June 24.
Using office procedures as an excuse, some departments deliberately delay services and permissions applied by citizens, Chief Minister said. Those who are able to bribe acquire quick service. On some occasions, officials would complete citizens' demands only after receiving an excessive amount of money.
“Until today, some people in governmental departments are wittingly practicing corruption. Let me warn them that they would suffer punishment by citizen unless they adjust their corrupt behavior immediately,” Dr. Aye Zan said.
U Min Htin Aung Han, a Hluttaw representative from Mawlamyine Township, said the government should closely monitor corruption in departments and take action against the perpetrators.
“Corruption would come to an end if citizens report it with concrete evidence to responsible government organizations and stop following the old practice in dealing with corruption case,” he said.
A Mawlamyine resident Daw Hlah Win said officials at passport office and identity card office offer a quick service to those who pay extra money while deliberately prolonging the process for those who cannot afford to pay.
“There are brokers in those offices. When a broker deals with officials on our behalf, the process of office service is a lot quicker because they prioritize him. Some people get their cards in one day while other wait for days,” she said.
Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan said the Mon State government is going to cooperate actively with Anti-Corruption Commission in the upcoming investigation process.
On June 18, nine Mon residents reported Chief Minister of Mon State and a minister to the Anti-Corruption Commission over failing to issue a tender notice for MMK 1,000 million-worth road construction project, between Yee Township’s Aung Thar Pyi and Hnit Kayin village. The duo was also reported over an alleged violation of tender procedures in building shredding machine on Mt. Kyaiktiyo.
