Lightning Strikes Kill Two People, Injure One, and Kill Two Buffaloes in Rakhine State

A series of lightning strikes over three days in the Rakhine State townships of Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, and Buthidaung has resulted in two deaths, one injury, and the loss of two buffaloes, according to local sources.

On the evening of April 30, a young Muslim man, identified as 28-year-old Chaw Su Anar (son of U Naw Ee Saung) from Thazintaw village in Buthidaung township, was killed by lightning while returning from fishing, a local resident told Narinjara.

"He was struck on the way back from the south of the village around 5:30 p.m. yesterday," the source said.

Earlier, on April 28, 40-year-old teacher U Ko San Hlaing from Nagu May village in Kyauktaw township was killed while riding a motorcycle to a religious festival in a nearby village, according to local reports.

Additionally, in Mrauk-U township, a villager was injured in a lightning strike on the evening of April 28 and subsequently hospitalized.

Earlier that same day, around 3:00 p.m., two buffaloes were killed by lightning in a separate incident in Mrauk-U.

With these fatalities and injuries occurring during the pre-monsoon period, officials are urging caution.

A United League of Arakan (ULA) official advised residents to be vigilant while traveling during the rainy season, noting, "Two people have died within three days due to lightning strikes, so people must be careful."

The Arakan People's Revolutionary Government has also issued a warning to residents to take safety precautions while fishing and foraging during the current weather conditions.
