SENG PHOO — The 14th confirmed COVID-19 patient in Burma was discharged from the Lashio public hospital on Saturday after more than one month of monitoring.

The patient, a 24-year-old man, remains the only confirmed case of COVID-19 in Lashio. He has been in the hospital since March 31, and will now be quarantined in the hospital in his hometown of Kyaukme for one week, hospital officials said, followed by two more weeks in his home.

The man was sick for the first three days he was in care, Dr. Nyan Myint, the head of Lashio’s public hospital said. However, following multiple rounds of testing, he is no longer believed to be suffering from the virus.

“He tested positive a couple of times. That’s why he had to continue to receive medical treatment in the hospital. Luckily, he has tested negative in the last two rounds of testing, so he has been allowed to leave the hospital,” the doctor told SHAN.

It is unknown where or from whom exactly the man contracted the coronavirus. He arrived in Tachileik, eastern Shan State after traveling from Bangkok, Thailand on March 25. He stayed in Tachileik for two nights before flying to Mandalay and traveling by private car to Kyaukme. Once he arrived home, he began showing symptoms of the virus and was subsequently hospitalized.

There have been seven confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Shan State. Two people have recovered. Nationwide, there have been 151 cases, six deaths and 31 recoveries.
