Kayah State Democratic Party Won't Meet New UEC

The Kayah State Democratic Party (KySDP) won't join a meeting with the new Union Election Commission (UEC) because it was created by the military regime.

Khu Thae Reh, KySDP's general secretary, told NMG the new UEC wasn't formed by the National League for Democracy (NLD) elected by the people of Burma.

Mann Aung Pyi Soe, chair of Karen National Democratic Party, said his party accepted the UEC's invitation to attend the meeting on Friday, February 26.

"In order to study the situation, we will go and listen to what they have to say,” he said, hoping something positive will come from it. “At the moment, I don't want to comment about whether or not we recognize the new UEC."

The army reassembled the UEC after staging a coup about three weeks ago.

The secretary for Chin National League for Democracy Party told NMG they haven't discussed the party's plans regarding the upcoming meeting.

KySDP General Secretary Khu Thae Reh said: “As an ethnic party, we don't want to accept the military coup that has affected so many people.” He urged the military regime and NLD to negotiate for a solution to the political crisis the country is facing.

“We're asking them to choose the best path for the people. Ethnic people want to build a federal union and we want a constitution that allows for this.”
