Junta Declares Retirement of Vice President U Henry Van Thio

The Junta has announced Vice President U Henry Van Thio's retirement from duty on April 22, citing health conditions. The retirement was approved in accordance with Decree No. 33/2024 and Article 419.

During the civilian government led by the National League for Democracy (NLD),

U Henry Van Thio received 79 out of 352 votes in the Pyithu Hluttaw (House of People's Representatives), resulting in his appointment as Vice President No. 2.

After the Junta staged the 2021 coup ousting the NLD government, he continued to serve as Vice President under Article 424, remaining a member of the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) chaired by Junta-appointed Acting President U Myint Swe.

He also became a state witness in a special trial held inside Naypyidaw prison, aiding in the prosecution of the ousted President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, both facing charges by the coup Junta.
