Investigation underway into custodial death in Oboe prison

Corrections Department issued a press statement yesterday which says departmental inquiry team has been constituted for the custodial death of under trial prisoner Tun Myint Win in Oboe prison, Mandalay.

Tun Myint Win aka Ko Tun who comes from Aung Thabyay village, Dahattaw village-tracts, Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region was arrested for staging a protest against a cement factory with coal-fired power plant. He died in judicial custody in Oboe prison, Mandalay on June 5 in the morning.

The prison authority said that he died while taking treatment at the prison hospital for withdrawal symptoms from alcohol but his family did not accept this reason and demanded a full inquiry.

The funeral service of Tun Myint Win was performed on Thursday evening in his village cemetery.
