Brother Accidentally Kills Younger Sibling

A boy accidentally killed his younger brother this Monday after firing a gun that he was playing with in an internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp.

A person, who spoke to NMG on condition of anonymity, says when the boys’ father went out the older brother began playing with the handgun and accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother sleeping in the camp in Mansi Township, located in Bhamo District. The bullet struck the younger sibling in the head, killing him instantly.

According to a camp headman, the older son found the handgun when he went looking for frogs and brought it into his house.

Maung Doi Ja's body was taken to Bhamo Hospital for autopsy and cremated the same day he was killed.

Police arrested Phowk Lu, the boy's father, and questioned his older son. The father was released on bail on June 9, according to residents of the IDP camp.
