To commemorate the August 8, 1988 pro-democracy uprising, a Rakhine organization donated robes and food for monks in Sittwe.

The 88 Rakhine Generation Social Development Organization offered mohinga and Waso robes to 11 monks at the Gyit Phat Monastery. After the donation ceremony, they held a prayer for those who lost their lives in the 88 uprising.

“The 88 uprising was a historic public movement aimed at taking down the one-party dictatorship and establishing democracy. Many lives were lost on this day. Many people also sacrificed their lives in prison while they were striving for Myanmar democracy. The aim is to ensure we do not forget them,” said U Aung Thein, chair of the RGSDO.

The RGSDO also issued a statement urging the government to reform the 2008 Constitution, to strive for all-inclusive peace and to put an end to violence in Maungdaw, Buthidaung, and Rathedaung townships.
