Sittwe police busted a shipment of over 3.4 million amphetamine tablets worth an estimated K1.02 billion on June 11. The drugs, which were believed to be en route to Maungdaw, were seized at Yay Chan Pyin Port in Rakhine State’s capital.

Police and military officials discovered the tablets, which were imprinted with “WY”, after stopping a vehicle outside the port. Around 340 bags of WY pink tablets were found hidden in a compartment under the floor of the vehicle along with 50 cement bags, 30 rolls of wire mesh and 15 rolls of iron fence spikes.

Each of the bags contained around 10,000 amphetamine tablets, according to Police Inspector Kyaw Thar Maung from the Yay Chan Pyin Police Station.

The 53-year-old driver from Ponnagyun township told police that two men from Pine Ward gave him K200,000 and instructed him to send the drugs to two men in Maungdaw.

Sittwe Myoma Police Station has filed charges against the driver, and the two at-large suspects.
