Houses in Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships were hard hit when Cyclone Mora lashed the state at the end of May. According to the latest figures compiled by local administrators, more than 14,000 homes in the district sustained some amount of damage.

“A total of 14,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed in Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships under Maungdaw District. Four thousand houses collapsed and another ten thousand houses sustained some damage,” said U Ye Htut, an administrator of Maungdaw District.

Collecting the list of damaged properties was initially hampered by transportation difficulties and a loss of telephone communication after the cyclone, he added.

Maungdaw Township Education Officer U Khin Aung told Narinjara News that 217 school buildings have been damaged in Maungdaw, with 30 completely destroyed.

Buthidaung Township Education Officer U Nyunt Pe said 194 schools in his township sustained damage, and among those, 14 were completely destroyed.

The Maungdaw District Administrator estimated repair costs could exceed K1.3 billion.

Last week, U Ko Ko Naing, director general of the Ministry for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement visited the damaged areas of Maungdaw District, accompanied by U Ye Htut. They provided monetary aid to families whose homes were destroyed, according to state media.
