Thousands of flood affected people from four Arakanese townships were evacuated to higher places like monasteries, government schools and other institutions as the State experienced heavy rainfall in the last few days.

The affected townships including Mrauk U, Min Bya, Kyauk Taw and Ann, which were inundated by the overflowing rivers namely Kaladan and Laymyo in the western province of Burma.

U San Kyaw, a Mrauk U district official informed that 26 schools under Mrauk U  township were opened for sheltering the flood affected families.

“Altogether 947 people (433 male and 514 female) belonging to 188 families under Mrauk U  township were evacuated to six school buildings on Monday. There will be thousands in rural areas where they are taking shelter in 20 schools,” said U San Kyaw.

The flood water has also damaged many bridges on  Yangon-Sittwe highway and huge areas of farm-lands. Local Relief volunteers informed that they have evacuated at least 10,000 people from the affected villages.

A resident named U Maung Maung Khin (47) drowned in Buthidaung, which is 80 miles of north of Sittwe in the flood water.

The affected families are now asking for food, safe drinking water, medicine and other necessary items from the government agencies, which has been responded positively by the responsible government officers.

U Tin Maung Swe, a Rakhine government official confirmed that the flood situation had worsened in all Mrauk U, Min Bya, Kyauk Taw and Ann townships.
