Amyotha Hluttaw MP submits complaint to MPC

Amyotha Hluttaw MP Daw Htoo May filed a complaint at the Myanmar Press Council on Friday because photos of hers were used in a book titled “Battles the AA Fought in Arakan State and History of the AA” written by Thaung Wai Oo.

The author used her photos without her permission, photos were taken of Dr Nyo Twan Aung at the dinner during the Union Peace Conference- 21st Century Panglong, Daw Htoo May said.

The author stated on page 64 that “the wife of the AA’s deputy leader Nyo Twan Aung is an MP”, this statement is a misnomer and voters might misunderstand her and that could tarnish her moral credibility, she said in her complaint.

Inaccurate or unverifiable information could cause serious damage to her reputation and her dignity as a lawmaker and it was an act of contempt on the behalf of parliament, she said in the complaint.

“I am a female and a member of parliament. Issuing false information about an individual is an assault on one’s dignity as a public servant and a human being.  So, the author must take responsibility for his actions. That’s why I submit my complaint to the MPC,” Daw Htoo May said.

In her complaint, she demanded the author and publisher to immediately stop distribution the book and to recall distributed copies, to announce a correction through state-owned media and to apologize for using her photo without permission.

She requested the MPC to take action to stop publishing the book and to punish the author under existing media laws.
