Four donation boxes burgled from Lawkanada pagoda

Burglars made off with four donation boxes containing 200,000 kyats from the ancient Sakyamuni Buddha image in the compound of Lawkanada pagoda in Arakan state, Burma on the night of September 28, said a pagoda trustee.
Burglars made off with four donation boxes containing 200,000 kyats from the ancient Sakyamuni Buddha image in the compound of Lawkanada pagoda in Arakan state, Burma on the night of September 28, said a pagoda trustee.

The robbers broke the locks on the entrance and took away four donation boxes and a 12-volt battery set.

The money in the four boxes is estimated to have been around 200,000 kyats, donated by pilgrims to support the maintenance of the pagoda's building, according to pagoda trustees.

The pagoda trustee complained about the stolen boxed to the No. 1 police station in Sittwe, also known as Akyab. The police are now looking for clues.

Many people in the city suspect army men are responsible, as several soldiers have been deployed at the pagoda since the monks' protests broke out in Sittwe on August 28, source said.

At night the army authorities do not allow pilgrims to enter the pagoda. The theft remains a mystery.
