Maungdaw, Burma: The Burmese junta’s repressive policy in Arakan State is reducing Rohingya farmers to penury. Over 480 acre farmlands belonging to Rohingyas in Taungbroo sub-border town in Maungdaw, were confiscated on flimsy grounds and distributed to Natala villagers by the Burmese authorities on June 5, said an owner of a farmland.

In the summer the authorities ordered Rohingya farmers in Taungbroo to grow beans in their farms. The Rohingyas cultivate beans in the summer season, said a village chairman.

The Rohingya farmers tried their best to grow beans and to reach the target and standard set by the Burmese regime but they were unable to satisfy the authorities, he added.

The Burmese authorities confiscated the farmlands of Rohingyas alleging that they were unable to produce the beans of the standard set by the junta, he added.

Rohingya farmers requested the authorities to give them a chance to cultivate paddy in the rainy season, but the authorities refused, a source close to the Nasaka said.

On June 5, all the farmlands were distributed to 120 Natala villagers in Taungbroo who are new arrivals, he added.

“How will we look after our families without our farmland? Now we will have to go to work as labourers to maintain our families,” said a farmer in Taungbroo.
