Several vehicles had their windows smashed in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township on Tuesday, according to the vehicles’ owners.

The windows of eight vehicles — seven private cars and a passenger bus — were damaged by vandals in two Kyaukphyu wards. Officers from the Kyaukphyu Township police station arrived at the scene for an inspection on Wednesday.

One of the car owners, U Aung Kyaw Hla, said: “The broken windows are worth more than K200,000 to K300,000 per piece. … It is like an insult to us.”

Another car owner who did not want to be named for security concerns described the vandalism as an anarchic act that threatened security in the town.

“It was not done out of personal grudge. Rather it was an act of pure vandalism,” he said. “Such acts are anarchic acts and a direct challenge to the rule of law. So, I want authorities to identify and take action against them as soon as possible.”

DMG phone calls to the Kyaukphyu Township police station went unanswered.
