Food shortages and diarrhea outbreak menace Sin Kae IDP camp

Since no relief aid has been provided, Sin Kae IDP camp in Mrauk-U Township faces food shortages, an outbreak of diarrhea and other maladies because of unclean water and lack of sheltering during hot weather, according to relief groups.

Eight people in the IDP camp located at the upper region of the Laymyo River were suffering serious illness and diarrhea and at least 10 others were facing other diseases, said U Zaw Zaw Tun, secretary of the Rakhine Ethnic Congress.

“They have to drink water from the creek. Because of strong wind and heavy rain in previous days, roofs and walls of the buildings in the camps were destroyed. They are now living in buildings without any fortification. Meanwhile, food is not provided because of security measures. Due to insufficient food and unclean water during the hot weather, refugees are suffering illness or diarrhea,” he said.

He added that he wanted authorities to help them to be able to provide medicine and food for the IDPs.

“Authorities should help us when we are in a difficult situation. It would be better if INGOs and CSOs send relief aid to a certain location to transport to the camp while the region is unstable at the moment,” he said.

There are 336 people in the camp and they fled from Sapaung and Chate Chaung villages, according to the figures of the Rakhine Ethnic Congress.
