For the first time in more than 30 years, Burma has published data on the country’s religious makeup based on the results of the 2014 nationwide census.
Report release covering national religion demographics (Photo: MOI/Facebook)Mon State’s population is 92.6 percent Buddhist, according to the report released by the Union Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population last Thursday in Nay Pyi Taw.
In addition to the Buddhist majority among Mon State’s 2,054,393 people, Muslims account for 5.8 percent, Hindus comprise 1 percent and Christians 0.5 percent. This gives the state the largest per capita proportion of Muslims in the country.
Other religions enumerated in the state’s data consist of 109 Animists, 141 people who reported no religious affiliation and 1,523 people who identified as “other.”
Neighboring states consist of 84.5 percent Buddhists in Karen State and 87.5 percent Buddhists in Tenasserim Division.
According to the report, Buddhists make up 87.9 percent of the country’s 51.4 million people while Christians constitute 6.2 percent, Muslims 4.3 percent, Animists 0.8 percent and Hindus 0.5 percent.
