At least six dozen buildings in northern Rakhine (Arakan) State were destroyed by a tornado that struck on July 24, according to damage lists compiled by a local police inspector and a politician. One woman was injured.

Eighteen houses in Na Gu May Village Group, Kyauktaw township collapsed, while another 15 saw the roofs destroyed, said Police Inspector Htay Zaw from A Pauk Wa Police Station. One woman’s arm was broken when her house was struck.

Another 39 buildings in Pa Zun Pe Village, Mrauk-U township were destroyed by the tornado earlier the same day.

“A report was sent to me. A total of 39 buildings including a school and a rice mill have collapsed,” said U Tun Thar Sein, a state Hluttaw MP for Mrauk-U.

Pa Zun Pe Village Administrator U Tun Mya confirmed the destruction included a school, a rice mill and two barns.

The families whose houses collapsed are currently living with friends and relatives nearby. The cost of the damage has not yet been calculated.
