Representatives from the Arakan Natural Resources and Environmental Network (ANREN) met on February 18 and 19 for an evaluation of past and present activities, according to Ko Tun Kyi, a leading member of the network.

 “We reviewed the four-year term of our responsibilities and then we chose some committee members to substitute in for the inactive executives. We also discussed future plans,” Ko Tun Kyi told Narinjara News.

During the meeting, participants discussed the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, which ANREN members have previously voiced opposition to and have demonstrated against. At the meeting, members said the forest around the SEZ is dying, and alleged that land confiscation and environmental damage due to extractive industries continues to plague the area. The network members also expressed interest in drafting a land policy.  

“We’ve already drawn a resource policy, which we will continue to work on. We have plans to share the details of this resource policy with the public and will accept public input. We also exchanged views within our network about drawing up a land policy to cover such matters,” Ko Tun Kyi said.

The network began assembling its natural resources policy in 2016 with the principle that all natural resources, including air, water and land in Rakhine State belong to Rakhine people who should have the right to manage any projects or development initiatives involving these resources.

He added that the network intends to continue monitoring and reviewing investment projects in Rakhine State.
The Arakan Natural Resources and Environmental Network is a coalition made up of around 40 members representing 17 civil society and environmental organizations throughout Rakhine State. The network is led by a 10-member steering committee.
