Myanmar Junta Tightens Security and Imposes Restrictions in Ywangan Following Clashes

Myanmar junta forces have intensified security checks, arbitrary arrests, and movement restrictions on civilians in Ywangan Township, southern Shan State, following a series of deadly ambushes and clashes with local resistance forces in late August.

Following fighting between Hstachan and Taungu villages in the final week of August—which reportedly inflicted heavy junta casualties—regime troops stationed themselves inside several rural villages across the Myaning Village Tract, including Ahlelchaung and Hpayargyikone.

Residents report that military personnel are enforcing an 8:00 p.m. curfew, banning public gatherings, and threatening to burn down communities if further resistance attacks occur.

"Junta troops were carrying out security checks before, but now they’ve become much stricter," a Ywangan resident told the Shan Herald Agency for News. "They arbitrarily arrest innocent people, and soldiers have warned that if fighting breaks out again, they will burn the villages to the ground. People are terrified of potential airstrikes."

Local sources also report that junta personnel operate in civilian clothing to conduct undercover patrols, arresting and interrogating individuals suspected of ties to anti-junta forces.

In more remote villages—such as Hsatchan, Taungu, Htaminpawng, Kyauktaw, Ngwetaung, and Thahpanpin—soldiers have reportedly detained and beaten local men, holding them without food until their families pay ransoms for their release.

The crackdown follows months of heightened instability in the region, including a major July 22 clash along the border of Ywangan and Thazi townships between regime forces and the Danu People's Liberation Army (DPLA), which left over 20 junta troops dead or wounded.
