Khaing Lu Hla (Roma Mray) — The Myanmar military is rapidly reinforcing its positions in Sittwe following a declaration by Arakan Army (AA) Commander-in-Chief Major General Twan Mrat Naing that the group intends to seize all remaining townships in Rakhine State, including Sittwe, Kyaukphyu and Man Aung , by the end of 2027.
Military sources report that between April 21 and 23, additional troops and heavy weaponry were deployed to at least seven locations west of Sittwe. These reinforcements have sparked significant concern among local residents who fear an imminent escalation in violence.
The surge in military presence spans several critical areas, including:West Sittwe: Sanpya Basa Village Camp, Thae Chaung Rakhine Villag, Sat Yoke, Ohn Taw Chey, Ohn Taw Gyi, Pallin Pyin, Aung Taingand Ye Chan Pyin.
During the Thingyan festival on April 13, the military reinforced the Shwe Min Gan Naval Baseand Ye Yo Pyin village on the border of Sittwe and Ponnagyuntownships.
Security has been tightened significantly at the Indian-developed Sittwe Port, where a large number of troops are now stationed.
Beyond troop movements, the military has turned the city into a fortress. Forced laborers and military personnel have reportedly dug extensive trenches and built bunkers around battalions and city limits. These defenses are being bolstered with bamboo spikes, iron spikes, and both anti-personnel and landmines.
A military analyst told Narinjara that the conflict has entered a "new era," characterized by the heavy use of technology over traditional heavy artillery. Both the Myanmar Army and the AA are increasingly deploying suicide drones and advanced surveillance UAVs.
"The fighting is evolving," the analyst said. "The two sides are using modern drones that disrupt communications and radio signals. Unfortunately, these drones are not always precise, leading to concerns over civilian casualties."
As the junta struggles to maintain control, observers warn of a likely increase in retaliatory strikes against the local population. If the military fails to repel the AA’s advance on the ground, experts anticipate a surge in indiscriminate air and drone strikes targeting residential villages.
"Residents need to be extremely vigilant regarding air strikes," the analyst warned. "If the military cannot defeat the AA on the battlefield, they often target the people instead."
In response to the AA's timeline for total regional control, the military regime has appointed a new commander for the Western Command and continues to expand its defensive perimeter around the state capital.
