More than 5,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Pekon Township, southern Shan State near Karenni State, urgently need shelter and winter supplies.
The junta and its ally Pa-O National Organisation have launched joint military operations in western Pekon Township, where Karenni resistance forces are active, and along Pinlaung Township in Shan State, driving residents to flee into nearby forests. They are now in urgent need of aid.
A member of Dove KK, a local relief group, told the Shan Herald that tarpaulin sheets are urgently needed to build temporary shelters for the displaced families.
“We’ve built as many tents as we can, but we still need to make more for about 100 families. Our main need is tarpaulin sheets for temporary shelters. We’ve been going to where the IDPs are staying and building tents for them,” he said.
Over 5,000 residents from nearly 10 villages along the Pekon–Pinlaung border have been evacuated due to the junta–PNO advance. The affected villages are Upper Bawyan, Lower Bawyan, Htitamawng, Yaeayekone, Loilong, Kathea, North Salong, South Salong, and Yaechan.
As winter approaches, IDPs urgently need shelters and winter supplies, as well as food, healthcare items, blankets, women’s and children’s essentials, and medicine, according to aid workers.
