In 15 townships under the AA's control, which includes Paletwa in Chin State, it will not allow elections for the military council, according to AA spokesperson U Khaing Thu Kha.
"Elections may be conducted in areas under the authority of the military council, but elections cannot be held in areas under our control," U Khaing Thu Kha said on August 11 at the AA's tenth press conference.
The people decide elections, and a candidate cannot win without public backing. According to U Khaing Thu Kha, the election conducted under the military dictatorship will just add to the bewilderment of the population of Rakhine.
"The elections have repeatedly held Burmese government in Rakhine State but had not benefited the Rakhine people. Therefore, I am sure that none of the Rakhine people are interested in these elections."
In the upcoming election, at least six Rakhine political parties, with the exception of the Arakan National Party, which was refused registration by the junta commission, will be able to run in three townships in Rakhine State: Sittwe, Kyauk Phu, and Manaung. However, the ongoing war makes it difficult to coordinate the parties for the election.
Elections are planned by the current military council throughout Myanmar, and arrangements are being made for them to take place in Sittwe, Kyaukpyu, and Manaung, which are under the control of the military council in Rakhine State. But because of intense battles between junta forces and the AA, there is no certainty that it will take place there.
The election will take place in two stages, in December 2025 and January 2026, according to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the chairman of the military council.
According to political analysts, the military council elections will not be free and fair for everyone to participate in, and the general public will not be interested in them in the midst of the ongoing conflict.
