Intense rainfall in Rakhine causes inundation in low-lying areas of multiple townships

Heavy rainfall in Rakhine has increased the water levels of rivers and streams, resulting in flooding in the low-lying areas throughout the townships.

A resident of Mrauk-U informed Narinjara that starting from May 26, communities close to rivers and lakes in the townships of Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, and Minbya have been facing flooding and submersion in low areas.

“Mountain water has flooded Mrauk-U town, and the Ramchaung's water level has increased, submerging approximately 10 surrounding villages. Villages exist between Mrauk-U and Kyauktaw as well. Moreover, the Laymyochaung has risen as well. The market in Tharettapin village, located in Kyauktaw, has been flooded,” he mentioned.

The ULA/AA is providing emergency assistance in certain areas of the inundated townships; however, additional relief, rescue, and evacuation efforts are still required in some areas, a source familiar with the ULA/AA informed Narinjara.

“They are focusing on rescuing individuals whose homes are no longer habitable in certain sections of Mrauk-U Kyauktaw. If the rain persists, things might get worse," he stated.

Minbya Township’s Min Phu Kwin, Pyin Yaw Kwin, Htin Bin Kwin, and Pan Myoung to Ganga Kwin regions are inundated, and Mrauk-U Township’s Kyaw Kwin, Paung Tok Kwin, Khaw Pone Kwin, and Ten Nyo are flooded as well.

Residents report that several villages, such as Ten Nyo Village, Thiek Wa Pyin, Tharet Ta Pin, Ywa Ma Pyin, and Samp Seik, are inundated as a result of the floods.

Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U, and Minbya are the sole towns connected by Narinjara, but the conditions in the other townships remain unclear due to phone communication issues.

A press release from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on the morning of June 2 indicates that heavy rains are anticipated to persist in several regions and states, including Rakhine, due to the strong monsoon in the Bay of Bengal.
