Junta Executes 23 Residents of Gangaw Township Village

Junta soldiers executed 11 people in Lelma Village in Gangaw Township, Magway Region on 12 May 2025 and took away a further 12 who were later reportedly executed.

On the morning of 12 May junta soldiers suddenly raided Lelma Village and took dozens of people prisoner.

The soldiers then executed 11 people in the village that they suspected of being PDF members. But of those, only seven were PDF members. The remaining four had nothing to do with PDFs. Amongst the executed there were three minors, two 17-year-old girls and a 16-year-old boy.

The soldiers then released a further 10 detained villagers but took 20 other detained villagers with them back to the Infantry Battalion (IB) 50 headquarters in Gangaw Town.

But on 21 May, Ko Ba Kaung who works for the local media outlet Yawalinntan (Ray of Yaw) reported that all of the 20 villagers who had been taken back to IB 50 headquarters had also been executed.

He said: “This morning [21 May 21], we got word from sources close to the junta that everyone who was arrested has already been killed.”

In total the junta summarily and illegally executed 23 people from Lelma Village.
